Ville Einar Matvejeff is one of the most interesting Finnish musical talents. Successful as a conductor, composer and pianist, he has established himself as an exceptionally wide-ranging musician. Born in 1986 in Finland and trained at the prestigious Sibelius Academy and Espoo Music Institute, Matvejeff is now one of the most sought-after young conductors and composers of his generation, having performed and his works being performed throughout the European countries as well as the USA, China, Japan and Mexico.
Matvejeff's career as conductor is developing with a fast pace in both symphonic and opera fields. He is recently appointed the Chief Conductor for Jyväskylä Sinfonia from January 2014 on. From season 2012/13 on he works as Conductor and Head of Coaching at the Malmö Opera in Sweden. Matvejeff made his praised conducting debut in September 2011 at Pori Opera with Purcell’s ”Fairy Queen”, and has recently worked in front of Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish National Opera Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Pori Sinfonietta, Joensuu Orchestra and Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. Season 2013-14 includes reinvitations to Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Joensuu Orchestra, Avanti! Chamber Orchestra and Jyväskylä Sinfonia as well as debuts with Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Lappeenranta Orchestra and Finnish Baroque Orchestra. Matvejeff has worked as assistant conductor to e.g. Esa-Pekka Salonen (Tristan und Isolde), Leif Segerstam, Michael Güttler and Piergiorgio Morandi. Matvejeff has also worked as vocal coach and assistant conductor at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm and music staff member at the Finnish National Opera. His current repertoire encompasses over 60 stage works, specializing particularly in modern and contemporary operas (including world premieres of Veli-Matti Puumala’s ”Anna Liisa”, Mikko Heiniö’s ”Eerik XIV” and Alexander Raskatov’s ”A Dog’s Heart”).
Matvejeff made his acclaimed debut as a pianist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under conductor Susanna Mälkki at the age of 18, and has since then been invited to perform at e.g. Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, Helsinki Festival, Bergen Festival, Kitakyushu Music Festival and Cervantino Festival Mexico, as well as numerous other festivals and orchestras both in Finland and abroad, also leading from the piano. Matvejeff took the first prize in Helmi Vesa Piano Competition in 2005 and third prize in the Jyväskylä Piano Competition in 2007. A devoted chamber and lied musician, Matvejeff has also recently started a partnership with soprano Karita Mattila, and they made their debut tour in 2012 performing at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Gulbenkian Foundation in Lissabon and Salle Pleyel in Paris. Future recital appearances include prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall, Théâtre du Châtelet and Zürich Opera. As a bass-baritone with perfect pitch, Matvejeff has performed numerous contemporary vocal works with Finnish orchestras and leading vocal ensembles. He made his opera soloist debut in 2009 in Juhani Nuorvala’s opera ”Flash Flash” based on Andy Warhol.
Recently, Matvejeff has established an up-and-rising career as a composer. Commissioned by e.g. Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Finnish Chamber Orchestra, his ”Cello Concerto” was performed at the Shanghai World EXPO 2010 to a choreography of Finnish National Ballet. His breakthrough work, ”Ad Astra” (2009), was greeted as ”the Finnish orchestral hit of the 21st century” by Helsingin Sanomat, leading newspaper in Finland. Matvejeff’s ”Violin Concerto” celebrated the inauguration of the Helsinki Music Centre in September 2011 as the first orchestral world premiere in its new Concert Hall designed by Yasuhisa Toyota, commissioned and performed by Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, violinist Petri Aarnio and conductor Osmo Vänskä. Having a great passion for human voice, Matvejeff has also written a substantial amount of vocal music, especially for chamber choirs (EMO Ensemble & Chamber Choir Krystostomos). See list of works.
Matvejeff is also the founder and artistic director of New Generation Opera and artistic director of Heinävesi Music Festival, beginning from 2012.
